What to see and do in Monsagro

Monsagro
Village
Monsagro is a hamlet in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the province of Salamanca, with 129 inhabitants (INE 2025) over 48.11 km², whose municipal area lies entirely within the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia natural park, between the peak of La Hastiala (1,735 m) and the course of the río Agadón. Founded during the medieval resettlement by the kings of León, it came to have 443 inhabitants in the mid-19th century, and since the year 2000 has lost 40% of its population. The façades of several of its houses are made with slabs showing marine ichnofossils from the Ordovician: cruziana trace fossils of trilobites and worm burrows more than 400 million years old, which are also explained in the village's Museo de los Mares Antiguos.

Nature
The municipal district reaches into the natural park of Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia and culminates in the peak of La Hastiala, of 1,735 metres. The river Agadón runs through it among chestnut and oak woods, at the contact between the Campo de Robledo and the sierra.

Curiosity
The façades of the houses are made with slabs that preserve Ordovician marine trace fossils, more than four hundred million years old: trilobite tracks and worm burrows. The Museum of the Ancient Seas explains how they got here.
