Doñinos de Salamanca
Village
Doñinos de Salamanca is a municipality in the Campo Charro, less than 10 kilometres from the centre of the provincial capital, which also includes the settlements of Argentina, El Pegollo, San Julián de la Valmuza and Santibáñez del Río. In the early 17th century, Doñinos was little more than an estate of six households, ecclesiastically dependent on Carrascal de Barregas, but its growth in the 17th and 18th centuries turned it into a municipality, with Santibáñez del Río and El Pegollo coming under its jurisdiction. In 1842 it had 140 inhabitants and 28 households; today it has around 2,273, favoured by its proximity to Salamanca and direct access to the Castile motorway and the Ruta de la Plata.
Ángel Mateos Museum of Doñinos
Monument
A space devoted to the work of the Salamancan sculptor Ángel Mateos Bernal (Villavieja de Yeltes, 1931), considered the only sculptor to have developed his entire body of work in concrete, a material that gives his pieces a strongly monumental and architectural character; in 2008 he received the Castile and León Arts Prize. The building itself, a habitable sculpture, was built between 1997 and 1999 using 420 cubic metres of concrete, in a farming village seven kilometres from Salamanca on the banks of the Tormes. Opened in 2002 as the Museum of Concrete, it reopened in 2019 under its current name, and brings together more than 170 works by the artist made between the 1970s and the 1990s, arranged in three rooms tracing his evolution from expressionism to minimalism.
