What to see and do in Dehesa de Montejo

Dehesa de Montejo
Village
Dehesa de Montejo is a municipality in the Palencia mountains, in the judicial district of Cervera de Pisuerga, which gathers the hamlets of Colmenares de Ojeda, La Estación and Vado across 43.78 square kilometres at 1,090 metres above sea level. It had 667 residents in 1900, reached 849 in 1960 and today keeps barely 130 inhabitants, a fifth of that peak figure: an example of the depopulation of these mountains.
Yew forest of Tosande
Nature
The Tejeda de Tosande is one of the largest concentrations of yew trees in the Iberian Peninsula and western Europe, with specimens of twisted trunks, diameters of one to one and a half metres, and heights exceeding fifteen metres. It stretches between 1,300 and 1,500 metres in altitude across the northern slope of Peña Oracada (1,818 m), in the Tosande valley, within the Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre - Montaña Palentina natural park, in the municipality of Dehesa de Montejo (Palencia). It grows on a Palaeozoic substrate that favours a surrounding beech wood, so that the yew wood forms part of a larger forest dominated by beech.
Tosande Yew Forest Trail
Activity
A route of 10.5 kilometres and 400 metres of accumulated ascent, of low difficulty except for one steep stretch, which sets out from the car park beside the C-626 road and climbs to the viewpoint over the yew wood.
Wooden walkways among the yews
Curiosity
So as not to compact the soil around the roots, the Tosande path is laid out with wooden platforms and signs that require walkers not to leave the route; an uncommon measure in Castilian woodlands.
