What to see and do in Cervera de Pisuerga

Cervera de Pisuerga
Village
Cervera de Pisuerga is the capital of the Montaña Palentina comarca, at the heart of the natural park of the same name, between 1,000 and 1,200 metres of altitude and 116 kilometres from Palencia, the capital. With 325 km², it has the largest municipal area in the province and gathers around 2,270 inhabitants. It sits on the right bank of the río Pisuerga, bordered by the arroyo Agüeros and the río Rivera, in a valley bounded by the Ruesga and Requejada reservoirs, and it arose as a crossroads between the Castilian lands and the Cantabrian slope. Its surroundings combine beech and oak forests in the higher areas with Pyrenean-oak and holm-oak groves toward the south. Its Gothic church of Santa María del Castillo, a Monumento Nacional (the former highest level of heritage protection in Spain) since 1977, holds an Adoration of the Kings by Juan de Flandes.
Church of Santa María del Castillo
Monument
The church of Santa María del Castillo, also known as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, stands on a rock overlooking the town of Cervera de Pisuerga (Palencia); its dedication recalls the old fortress that once stood on the site. It is a building in flamboyant Gothic style, constructed in several stages during the 15th and 16th centuries, with a single nave, two side chapels acting as a transept, a polygonal chancel and a choir at the foot, covered with ribbed vaults. The chapel of Santa Ana holds a Hispano-Flemish walnut altarpiece by Felipe Vigarny and León Picardo, and the altarpiece of the main chapel, a 1607 work by Juan Gil del Barrio Palacio, includes the 14th-century Gothic image of the Virgen del Castillo. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1978.
Adoration of the Magi by Juan de Flandes
Curiosity
In the predella of the Santa Ana altarpiece is inserted a panel dated 1495 and attributed to Juan de Flandes, chamber painter to the Catholic Monarchs; it is the most valuable piece in the town's parish museum.
Ruesga Dam
Historical milestone
Built in 1923 to regulate the river Rivera, the dam created a reservoir of ten cubic hectometres that today has an authorised bathing area and a recreational area at the foot of the parador, right on the edge of Cervera.
Montaña Palentina Park Visitor Centre
Activity
In the centre of Cervera, three floors of permanent exhibition under the title Zona Oso explain the fauna and geology of the natural park and include a taxidermied specimen of the bear known as Pintojo.
Montaña Palentina Natural Park
Nature
The Montaña Palentina Natural Park, declared on 5 July 2000 under the name Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina, covers 78,360 hectares in the north of the province of Palencia, on the southern slope of the Cantabrian mountain range. It owed its original name to the sites of Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente del Cobre, regarded as the sources of the Carrión and Pisuerga rivers, around whose courses the area is arranged; the Carrión flows through the more mountainous area, with the peak of Curavacas, the highest point in Palencia at 2,525 metres, while the Pisuerga waters a more wooded area, near Cervera de Pisuerga. Law 4/2020 changed its name to the current Montaña Palentina, the name of the comarca in which it lies.

Food and drink
Cattle raised on the upland pastures of the north of the province are protected under this Guarantee Mark, authorised in 1998, whose production area covers 21 municipalities of the Montaña Palentina centred on Cervera de Pisuerga. The eligible breeds are the Parda de Montaña and the Limousin and their crosses as breeding stock, and the Parda de Montaña, the Limousin, the Charolais and the Asturiana as sires; 33 farms, 2 abattoirs and 13 points of sale take part. In 2006, 930 head of cattle were slaughtered under this mark, around 226 tonnes of meat sold. It supports local cuisine alongside the matanza, hunting, mushrooms and trout from the mountain rivers.
