What to see and do in Salinas de Pisuerga

Salinas de Pisuerga
Village
Salinas de Pisuerga, formerly Salinas del Río Pisuerga, is a municipality of 348 inhabitants at 947 metres above sea level, in the Montaña Palentina area. It is made up of the Abajo, Enmedio and la Calleja quarters, together with the hamlets of Monasterio, Renedo de Zalima and San Mamés de Zalima. A pre-Roman hillfort attributed to the Cantabri has been documented on its land. It preserves a medieval bridge and the church of San Pelayo, next to the Quintanahernando hermitage. It has a station on the narrow-gauge La Robla railway, which links León with Bilbao, opened in 1894. It traditionally lived off livestock grazing, now in decline. Its festivals are San Pelayo, on 26 June, and San Isidro Labrador, on 15 May.
Church of San Pelayo de Salinas de Pisuerga

A notable example of sixteenth-century Gothic in the mountains, it holds altarpieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a fourteenth-century wooden carving of the crucified Christ and a seventeenth-century processional cross.
Church of El Salvador de Foldada
Monument
A twelfth-century church in the small settlement of Foldada, one of the links in the chain of Romanesque churches that connects the Pisuerga valley between Cervera de Pisuerga and Aguilar de Campoo.
Sopa albada and rastrojo soups
Food and drink
The Castilian soup has in Palencia two quite distinct versions: the sopas de rastrojo or toasted soups and the sopa albada, a gratinated garlic soup; both are made with round loaf bread and are served in the houses of the mountains.
