What to see and do in Calahorra de Boedo

Calahorra de Boedo
Village
Calahorra de Boedo is a municipality in the Boedo-Ojeda area, in Palencia province, on the Camino de Santiago del Norte, on its Ruta del Besaya, at 855 metres above sea level; it has about eighty inhabitants, against the 391 it reached in 1950. Its name comes from the Arabic Calagurra, free castle. Near the church, in the El Torrejón area, stood a small medieval fortification of which barely any remains survive today, and Madoz recorded in the mid-19th century that vestiges of a castle of the lordship of Frías still survived. The area preserves pre-Roman materials and a Roman villa at Zarratuna, and was resettled in the 9th century. It preserves the Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de las Candelas, with a renowned baptismal font.
Church of Nuestra Señora de las Candelas
Monument
Built in masonry and brick over an unmistakably Romanesque origin, it presides over the village from its height and is the obligatory stop for those who travel the Boedo valley on the way to Aguilar de Campoo.
Romanesque baptismal font of Calahorra
Curiosity
The most valuable piece in the church is its Romanesque baptismal font, considered by scholars one of the finest in Spain for the richness and quality of its iconographic programme carved in stone.
Camino del Norte through the Boedo
Activity
The inland route of the Camino del Norte crosses the Boedo valley and links Calahorra with Herrera de Pisuerga, a little-travelled stretch that allows half a dozen Romanesque churches to be strung together in a single day.
