Church-fortress of Santa María la Mayor

Monument · Villamuriel de Cerrato, El Cerrato, Palencia

Begun at the end of the twelfth century by Bishop Arderico of Palencia and completed in the mid-fifteenth, it combines Cistercian Romanesque in transition to Gothic with an octagonal lantern tower; it has been a Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) since 1931.
