What to see and do in Sariegos

Sariegos
Village
Sariegos is a municipality of about 5,455 inhabitants situated at 864 meters by the Bernesga river, in the province of León, first documented in 1144, when the granting of estates to the monastery of San Agustín in Carbajal is recorded. It was mainly agricultural and pastoral until the end of the 20th century, when it became a residential settlement of neighboring León and its main activities shifted to services and construction, which has multiplied its population since the 1990s. The present-day municipality was formed in 1855 by the separation from San Andrés of the villages of Sariegos, Azadinos and Pobladura, which were joined by Carbajal de la Legua, formerly of Cuadros; this last settlement, with more than 2,700 residents, is today the largest in the municipality, whose patron saint is Saint Julian.

Monument
A parish that Madoz described in the mid-nineteenth century as served by a priest of second promotion and presented by the Marquis of Castel Moncayo, in a place of thirty-eight houses on the flat of the Bernesga valley.
Sariegos, from solariego to place name
Curiosity
It has been proposed that the name derives from the term solariego, the form of resettlement by which the lord handed over plots in exchange for a tax or a service, although others see it as a demonym for those who came from the Galician Sar.
First mention of Sariegos
Historical milestone
The name appears in the handing over of a series of properties to the monastery of San Agustín de Carbajal, among them that of Argovelius in Sariegos, which shows that the settlement was already functioning regularly.
Creation of the municipality of Sariegos
Historical milestone
The municipality was formed when the villages of Sariegos, Azadinos and Pobladura split off from San Andrés, joined by Carbajal de la Legua, until then part of the neighbouring municipality of Cuadros.
