What to see and do in Garrafe de Torío

Garrafe de Torío
Village
Garrafe de Torío is a municipality in the district of Tierras de León, sixteen kilometers from the provincial capital, bringing together fifteen villages in the Torío river valley, between 860 and 1,210 meters above sea level; its main settlement stands at 918 meters. The territory, crisscrossed by numerous streams that feed the Torío, is separated by mountains from the Bernesga valley and borders the municipalities of La Robla, Matallana de Torío, Santa Colomba de Curueño, Vegas del Condado, Villaquilambre, Sariegos and Cuadros. In the mid-19th century the place had only 28 houses, and its farming at the time is remembered for producing wheat, rye, flax and good pastures. Today it numbers about 1,650 inhabitants spread across its fifteen settlements.

Torío River Valley
Nature
The Torío valley is a traditional comarca of the province of León formed by the present-day municipalities of Garrafe de Torío and Villaquilambre, a few kilometres from the León capital. Its landscape is typical of a páramo of gentle hills, stretched over the course of the río Torío before it enters the city of León. The corridor is separated from the Bernesga valley by a line of mountains that reaches 1,210 metres at its north-eastern end, while the riverbank drops to 860 metres; numerous streams and minor rivers feed into the Torío from both slopes.
