What to see and do in El Burgo Ranero

El Burgo Ranero
Village
El Burgo Ranero is a municipality of León of about 695 inhabitants in the comarca of Sahagún, at 879 metres of altitude, crossed by the Camino Francés to Santiago. It brings together four settlements: El Burgo Ranero, Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, Las Grañeras and Villamuñío. It lies in the corridor of the León-Burgos motorway and preserves a station on the railway line from Venta de Baños to Gijón, with medium-distance services towards Gijón, León, Valladolid and Palencia; through its territory also passes the route of the León-Madrid AVE high-speed line, although without a stop. The nearest airport, that of León, is 40 kilometres away.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de El Burgo Ranero
Monument
The parish church of the municipal seat, raised with the building techniques of the León Tierra de Campos, rammed earth and brick, and a visual landmark on a plain where there are hardly any features of relief.
Calzadilla de los Hermanillos and the Via Trajana
Activity
Through this village runs the Roman variant of the Camino Francés, the path linking Calzadilla with Calzada del Coto and continuing towards Mansilla de las Mulas away from the road, the loneliest option on the whole León stretch.
The adobe of El Burgo Ranero
Curiosity
The municipality's houses were raised with adobe, mud kneaded with straw and dried in the sun, the technique that defines the built fabric of the whole Tierra de Campos and that explains the uniform earthy colour of its streets.
Festivities of San Bartolomé de Calzadilla
Activity
From 21 to 25 August the kintos, the residents turning twenty that year, organise the festivities of San Bartolomé with handball tournaments, card championships, bands and a procession.
Suckling lamb of churra sheep
Food and drink
The churra is the traditional sheep breed of the Tierra de Campos and its milk-fed lamb, roasted in a wood-fired oven, is still the dish of the great festivals; the breed's low productivity today threatens its continuity.
