Santa Cristina de Valmadrigal
Village
Santa Cristina de Valmadrigal is a municipality of about 275 inhabitants situated at 815 metres altitude, in the Esla-Campos district of the province of León, 39 kilometres from the provincial capital. Besides the eponymous locality it includes the settlement of Matallana de Valmadrigal. Its municipal area, an arid tableland with small rises, marks the transition between the Los Oteros district and the León Tierra de Campos; the Valmadrigal stream that crosses it gives the municipality its name. In the mid-19th century the town had barely forty houses, according to Pascual Madoz's dictionary. In the village, its curious botijo-shaped fountain draws attention.
