What to see and do in Sena de Luna

Sena de Luna
Village
Sena de Luna is a municipality in the Leonese mountains, at 1,139 metres of altitude and with about 375 inhabitants spread across eight villages, among them Caldas de Luna. It was part of the old council of Luna de Arriba, with its town hall in Láncara de Luna, until the Barrios de Luna reservoir, in 1956, flooded seven hamlets of the valley —Arévalo, Campo de Luna, Lagüelles, Oblanca, San Pedro de Luna, Santa Eulalia de las Manzanas and Láncara itself— and moved the capital to Sena de Luna. It borders the Asturian council of Lena to the north. Despite its traditional isolation, it is now well connected thanks to the Ruta de la Plata motorway and the Negrón tunnel, which links Asturias with the Leonese meseta.
Transfer of the town council to Sena de Luna
Historical milestone
In 1956, with the reservoir already inaugurated and seven of its villages under the water, the municipality of Láncara de Luna moved its seat to Sena de Luna and adopted the name it has kept ever since.
Negrón Tunnel
Curiosity
More than four kilometres long, the tunnel that pierces the Cantabrian watershed on the Ruta de la Plata motorway put an end to the valley's winter isolation and left the Pajares pass as a scenic alternative.
High-altitude pastures of Abelgas de Luna
Nature
The high pastures of Abelgas, Rabanal and Robledo de Caldas preserve brañas and shepherds' folds in communal use within the biosphere reserve of the Omaña and Luna valleys, with hay meadows that climb up to the foot of the sierra.
The eight villages that survived the reservoir
Curiosity
Sena, Caldas, Aralla, Abelgas, Rabanal, Pobladura, Robledo de Caldas and Vega de Robledo are what remained of the old council of Láncara after the valley was flooded: fewer than four hundred registered households.
