What to see and do in Pobladura de Pelayo García

Pobladura de Pelayo García
Village
Pobladura de Pelayo García is a village in the Páramo Leonés, with about 365 inhabitants, which preserves a centuries-old holm-oak grove within its territory. Its name alludes to the medieval resettlement of reconquered lands and, according to tradition, to a founder named Pelayo García. At the feast of the Vow to the Virgin of the Anguishes and at Corpus Christi, the young people dance during the procession and then perform paloteo stick dances, a tradition already documented in 1666; formerly each group was made up of eight men, today also women, wearing a double starched white skirt, an embroidered belt and, at shoulder height, five roses surrounded by green feathers. The wooden castanets sound to the tune of the dulzaina.

Nature
The district preserves a wood of centuries-old holm oaks, the remnant of the woodland Madoz described in the mid-19th century and which has survived the clearances that swept away the trees across the rest of the plain.
Dancers and birrias of Pobladura
Curiosity
Eight dancers in starched white skirts with five roses on the back dance to the sound of the dulzaina and the drum. They are accompanied by two birrias dressed as devils who part the crowd with lashes of a whip and shave one another with a scythe.

Activity
On 22 April the young people of the village dance during the procession and afterwards perform stick dances as a spectacle or in honour of someone sick or singled out. The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament was already recording dance expenses in 1666.
