What to see and do in Matanza de los Oteros

Matanza de los Oteros
Village
Matanza de los Oteros is the seat of the municipality of Matanza, in the province of León, 46 kilometres south of the León provincial capital. Its cluster of houses sits at 825 metres altitude on the grain-growing tableland of the Oteros del Rey, a landscape dominated by isolated hills —the oteros— left standing on the plain by erosion, crossed by streams such as the Raneros, a tributary of the Cea, which irrigate the area's crops. Its origins go back to the medieval resettlement of the late 9th century, in the time of Alfonso III the Great, with people who came from the north of the peninsula, Franks and Mozarabs. Its hermitage of the Virgen del Rosario boasts a Romanesque-Mudéjar bell-gable and a 16th-century carving that is celebrated on the first weekend of October, and today it has 157 inhabitants.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Rosario de Matanza
Monument
A hermitage whose bell tower, with a stone base and two stages, answers to a Romanesque-Mudéjar style. Inside, the 16th-century carving of the local patroness is venerated, known among local people as La Cañamona.
Lagoons of Los Oteros
Nature
Seasonal pools and wetlands among knolls and cereal moorland, included in the network of protected areas alongside the Oteros-Campos Special Protection Area for birds. They support a steppe birdlife now scarce on the meseta.
