Matanza
Village
Matanza is the official name of the León municipality that brings together the villages of Matanza de los Oteros, Valdespino Cerón and Zalamillas, with about 155 residents in total, situated 46 kilometres south of the León provincial capital. Its landscape, on the grain-growing tableland of the Oteros del Rey, is dominated by the hills and moorland that rise to 828 metres, among which runs the Raneros stream, a tributary of the Cea river. The area is protected as the Oteros-Campos SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) and as the Site of Community Importance of the Lagunas de los Oteros. A recent legend attributes the village's name to a massacre of Muslim troops by Alfonso III the Great in the year 878, in the field of La Polvoraria; experts consider the place name to actually be a reference derived from "mata".
