Monastery of Santa María de Sandoval Monument · Mansilla Mayor, Esla-Campos, León The monastery of Santa María de Sandoval, in Villaverde de Sandoval, within the municipality of Mansilla Mayor, is a former 12th-century Cistercian abbey now in a state of partial ruin. Its vaults, pillars and capitals in the chancel and first bay are Romanesque of Cistercian affiliation, while the rest of the building belongs to the late Gothic period; it was declared a historic-artistic monument on 3 June 1931. The church still functions as a parish and still hosts liturgical services on rare occasions. In 2015, when Unesco's designation of the Way of St James in Spain was expanded, the monastery was included, under number 1464, in the retrospective inventory of elements associated with that route.
