What to see and do in Urdiales del Páramo

Urdiales del Páramo
Village
Urdiales del Páramo is a municipality of about 445 inhabitants at 812 metres above sea level, in the Páramo Leonés, also made up of Mansilla and Villarrín del Páramo. Part of its territory belonged to the lordship of the Counts of Luna, whose seat of power lay in Laguna de Negrillos, and part to the marquisate of Astorga, within the jurisdiction of Villazala; in 1685 the marquisate split off that jurisdiction, too large to manage, and formed a new one with its capital at Laguna Dalga, while Mansilla del Páramo, being crown land (realengo), had its own jurisdiction. The municipality arose in 1857 when it split off from Santa María del Páramo. It honours San Vicente on 22 January and San Cipriano, its patron, on 16 September.
Flint handaxe of Urdiales
Curiosity
Found in 1948 and dated to the Lower Palaeolithic, it is, together with the quartzite trihedral pick from Villarrín del Páramo, one of only two pieces of evidence of early prehistory known in the central part of the comarca.
Separation of Urdiales del Páramo
Historical milestone
The municipality was constituted that year on separating from Santa María del Páramo. Urdiales had been a lordship of the counts of Luna, with a steward of its own, while Mansilla del Páramo had jurisdiction over itself as crown land.
