What to see and do in Ardón

Ardón
Village
Ardón is a municipality in the El Páramo comarca, in the province of León, situated at 783 metres above sea level and 21 kilometres from the capital, which brings together six settlements: Ardón, Benazolve, Cillanueva, Fresnellino del Monte, San Cibrián and Villalobar. It has about 530 inhabitants. It traditionally lived off vine growing, today replaced by irrigated maize and other cereals, and preserves traditional wine cellars, now disused, and dovecotes, of which only two remain complete. On 9 July 1931, at half past nine in the morning, a fireball flew over the province of León and dropped a meteorite on Ardón, an ordinary L6-group chondrite that a local resident kept for 83 years and which is now on display at the Museum of Natural Sciences.
Hillforts of El Castillo and El Castro
Nature
Two fortified settlements on a knoll above the escarpment of the Esla. The first was occupied in the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age and reoccupied in the early and high Middle Ages; the second only in the Late Bronze Age.
Milestone of Cillanueva
Monument
A milestone which, together with an inscription found at Banuncias, documents the line of the Roman road that linked Asturica Augusta with Burdigala across the Páramo, a route still much travelled in the Middle Ages.
Wine cellars and dovecotes of Ardón
Curiosity
The municipality preserves cellars cut into the ground that served for making and keeping wine and which today work mainly as places to eat. Of the traditional dovecotes, on the other hand, only two survive intact.
