What to see and do in Valdevimbre

Valdevimbre
Village
Valdevimbre is a town in the El Páramo comarca, in the province of León, situated at 813 metres above sea level on predominantly flat land that descends eastward to the vega of the Esla. Its name comes from the Latin vallis and vimen, 'valley abounding in plants with flexible branches', like willow osier. Irrigated since the 1960s by the canals of the Barrios de Luna reservoir, beside the Valle de Fontecha stream, it now has about 890 inhabitants. It is the capital of Prieto Picudo wine, with underground cellars turned into taverns, and its Wine Festivities on 10 August are considered the oldest dedicated to wine in Castile and León.

Nature
A uniform stand of holm oak in the north of the municipality, much degraded and coppiced by the traditional use for charcoal and firewood. Beneath it grow brooms, lavenders and hare's-foot clover.

Curiosity
The village is honeycombed by a labyrinth of cellars dug into the hillside, with their vent shafts breaking the surface. Many have been turned into underground dining rooms where Leonese cooking is served.
Festivities of el Vino de Valdevimbre
Activity
Held around the feast of San Lorenzo, on 10 August, they are considered the oldest festival devoted to wine in Castilla y León. Thousands of litres are served and the dish eaten is the roll filled with chorizo cooked in wine.

Food and drink
The village is considered the capital of prieto picudo, the native grape of the Tierra de León Designation of Origin. Its emblematic dish is chorizo cooked in wine, accompanied by stewed omelette.
