What to see and do in Villarejo de Órbigo

Villarejo de Órbigo
Village
Villarejo de Órbigo is a municipality in the province of León, on the banks of the Órbigo river, made up of four villages: Estébanez de la Calzada, Veguellina de Órbigo, Villarejo de Órbigo and Villoria de Órbigo, with around 2,855 inhabitants in total. Its economy has traditionally been agricultural and pastoral, with cereals, maize, alfalfa and sugar beet, the latter in decline since the closure of the Veguellina sugar refinery. For Corpus Christi, at the end of May, three days of festivities culminate on the Saturday with carpets of dyed sawdust depicting religious motifs along the route of the procession; on 11 November its patron saint is honoured, San Martín de Tours. Its cuisine is notable for trout soups: a garlic soup with country bread, paprika and oil, to which the trout is added in pieces.

Monument

Sawdust carpets of Corpus Christi
Activity
At the end of May the villagers lay carpets of dyed sawdust with religious motifs through the streets, marking out the route of the Corpus Christi procession. The festival lasts three days and Saturday is the great day.
Trout soup of the Órbigo
Food and drink
On the base of garlic soup, with country bread, paprika and oil, trout from the river is added in pieces or flaked, which makes the dish far denser and more filling than the soup it starts from.
