What to see and do in Santa Marina del Rey

Santa Marina del Rey
Village
Santa Marina del Rey is a town in the El Páramo comarca of León, with about 1,720 inhabitants, situated on the bank of the Órbigo river, where it has one of the most important brown-trout preserves in Spain, about five kilometres long. Its history is largely that of irrigation water: the Presa Cerrajera once drove half a dozen mills, and in its five villages forges and looms for household use developed. It was born from the union of three original settlements, San Lázaro, Santa Lucía and San Pelayo, formed under the reign of Ferdinand II of León. It preserves a 1599 tower clock, the work of the León locksmith Antonio Villafranca, which ran on weights until recently and today receives electric assistance, and it holds its Garlic Fair every year.
