What to see and do in Humada

Humada
Village
Humada is a municipality in Burgos with barely 114 inhabitants spread over eight minor local entities — among them Fuenteodra and the two Ordejones —, in the Páramos comarca, 59 kilometres from Burgos. It was called Los Ordejones until 1877, when it adopted its present name. Since 2017 it has been part of the Las Loras Geopark, the first Unesco geopark in Castile and León, a land of cold winters and heavy snowfalls. It formerly belonged to the Cuadrilla de Valdelucio, within the district of Villadiego, under the lordship of the Duke of Frías. Every summer the small hamlet of Fuenteodra hosts the Fuenteodra Rocks music festival.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Humada
Monument
One of the several Romanesque buildings the municipality preserves, located in the village of Humada itself, at 954 metres of altitude on the western edge of the Burgos moorlands.
Church of San Julián Obispo de Rebolledo de Traspeña
Monument
A Romanesque church in one of the municipality's eight villages, part since 2017 of the Las Loras UNESCO Global Geopark, which takes in nine municipalities shared between Burgos and Palencia.
Los Ordejones
Curiosity
The entity of Los Ordejones groups two twin hamlets, Ordejón de Abajo or Santa María and Ordejón de Arriba or San Juan, a duplication of settlement typical of these highland plains of northern Burgos. Its name comes from the urce, a plant similar to heather that was abundant in the area, and both villages are mentioned in the Cantar de Mio Cid under their second names, San Juan and Santa María, because those lands belonged to the family of the Cid. It belonged to the Cuadrilla de Sandoval, in the partido of Villadiego, under the lordship of the Duke of Frías. In the 1990s the linguist Iván Ortega Santos collected here the oral traditions of the valley, such as the Marzas and the Reyes songs.
From the name Los Ordejones to Humada
Historical milestone
The municipality was called Los Ordejones until 1877, when it took the name Humada; before that it had formed part of the district of Valdelucio, under the jurisdiction of the duchy of Frías.
