What to see and do in Rebolledo de la Torre

Rebolledo de la Torre
Village
Rebolledo de la Torre is a municipality of barely a hundred inhabitants in the Burgos comarca of Páramos, within the Las Loras Geopark, the first Unesco geopark in Castile and León. It groups together the settlements of Albacastro, Castrecías, La Rebolleda, Valtierra and Villela around the head town, watered by the Barral, Andrinal, Pradiguán and Rucín streams. Its church of San Julián and Santa Basilisa preserves a Romanesque porticoed gallery of ten arches signed by Juan de Piasca in 1186, declared a Monumento Nacional (National Monument, a historic heritage protection designation) in 1931, and nearby stand the remains of a late medieval castle. As early as 1011 the place may have been mentioned in the founding document of the monastery of San Salvador de Oña.

Monument
A Romanesque gallery of ten round arches with a splayed doorway, with decorative sculpture of exceptional quality; the ensemble was declared a Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) on 3 June 1931.
The signature of Juan de Piasca
Historical milestone
The gallery bears carved on it the signature of its maker, Juan de Piasca, together with the year 1186, a very rare case of a Romanesque work with its authorship and date documented in the building's own stone.
Restoration under the Romanico Norte plan
Curiosity
The church was restored in 2006 under the regional Románico Norte programme, which worked on dozens of churches in northern Burgos and Palencia to halt their decay and return them to use.
The six villages of Rebolledo
Curiosity
The municipality brings together Rebolledo, Albacastro, Castrecías, La Rebolleda, Valtierra and Villela, six settlements that between them amount to barely a hundred inhabitants at the north-western tip of the province of Burgos.
Plateaus of northwestern Burgos
Nature
The district extends over the limestone platforms that link the Burgos moorlands with the Ojeda of Palencia, dry-farmed cereal country with Portuguese oaks and junipers and barely three inhabitants per square kilometre.

Food and drink
The milk-fed lamb raised on these moorlands is covered by the Lechazo de Castilla y León geographical indication and is roasted in a wood-fired oven, the centrepiece dish of the festivals of every village in the comarca.
