What to see and do in Fresno de Río Tirón

Fresno de Río Tirón
Village
Fresno de Río Tirón is a municipality of Burgos in the comarca of Montes de Oca, 5 kilometres from Belorado and 50 from the capital, bordering La Rioja and bathed by the Tirón river. It belonged to the alfoz of Cerezo, a district of Arab origin documented since the 10th century, whose first written mention of Fresno dates from the year 903, as "Sancta María de Fresnu". In its territory stands the convent of San Vitores, built in 1446 over the cave where the saint died, occupied first by Dominicans and later by Franciscans until the Mendizábal disentailment. Its population grew to 473 inhabitants in 1887, before declining steadily owing to emigration to industrial areas; today it has 156 inhabitants.
The convent of San Vítores

The Constable of Castile ordered it raised in 1464 to guard the relics of San Vítores. Dominicans occupied it until the middle of the sixteenth century and afterwards Franciscans, who remained in it until 1825.
