What to see and do in Viloria de Rioja

Viloria de Rioja
Village
Viloria de Rioja is a hamlet in the Montes de Oca, in the province of Burgos, with 38 inhabitants, located right on the Camino de Santiago, at the foot of the Ayago mountains and near La Rioja. It is documented in 1028, under the name Villa Oria, in a donation to the women's monastery of Pedroso. Here, around 1019, was born Domingo García, later Santo Domingo de la Calzada, who rebuilt the causeway between Nájera and Redecilla del Camino and diverted the Camino de Santiago southward, bringing it up onto the Meseta through the Montes de Oca, where his disciple San Juan de Ortega worked; he died in 1109 in the town he himself founded and which bears his name. In 2015 Unesco included Viloria de Rioja in the inventory of elements associated with the Camino de Santiago.
