What to see and do in Cerezo de Río Tirón

Cerezo de Río Tirón
Village
Cerezo de Río Tirón is a town of 467 inhabitants in eastern Burgos, near the border with La Rioja, on the middle course of the Tirón river. A frontier in Antiquity between the Autrigones and the Berones, it was later crossed by the Roman road from Tarragona to Astorga, of which two bridges and a well-preserved stretch remain at El Perrillo. Resettled after Arab rule by Alavese people under the command of Count Abelmondar Téllez, the Castilian count Gonzalo Téllez made it the head of his county in the 10th century, and Sancho Garcés III of Pamplona made it the head of an extensive alfoz; it lost that status under Ferdinand I of León and changed hands between Castile and Navarre. It retains remains of a wall, the Roman bridges, the neoclassical church of San Nicolás de Bari, and a glauberite mine.
The Roman bridge of San Ciprián
Monument
Of a single round span and sandstone ashlars, with a barrel vault in the intrados, it crosses the river beside the calle de San Vítores. It formed part of the Roman road that joined Tarraco with Asturica Augusta.
Segisamunculum, the city of the Autrigones
Curiosity
Beneath the present village lies the Autrigonian and later Roman settlement of Segisamunculum, which came to mint coin; part of its materials is displayed in the parish museum and in the Museo Arqueológico of Burgos.
San Vitores, the beheaded saint
Curiosity
Tradition makes San Vitores a native of Cerezo and a presbyter of its early church, beheaded by the Muslims; his name later remained in streets, bridges and hermitages scattered throughout the valley of the Tirón.
The county of Cerezo on the eastern frontier
Historical milestone
Cerezo was head of a Castilian county and a piece of the defensive line that, with Ibrillos, Grañón, Cellorigo, Lantarón and Pancorbo, closed the eastern end of Castile; its castle, of the ninth century, was remodelled in the fifteenth.
The banks of the Tirón and the European mink
Nature
The river forms part of the area Riberas del Río Tirón y Afluentes of the Natura 2000 Network; the censuses place in this sub-basin the greatest density of European mink in the whole province of Burgos.
