Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Espino Monument · Santa Gadea del Cid, Ebro, Burgos A medieval monastery in pure Gothic style, built almost entirely of ashlar, whose origin goes back to the apparition of the Virgin to two shepherds from Santa Gadea del Cid in the spring of 1399, at the spot where, according to tradition, many Christians had been martyred during the Muslim invasion. Under the Benedictine order a small hermitage was first built, which in the 15th century was transformed into the monastery, completed in 1443 and named Nuestra Señora del Espino after the bush beside which the Virgin appeared. It was declared a protected site on 31 October 1991; it stands on the outskirts of the town, at the foot of the cliffs of the Montes Obarenes.
