What to see and do in Villasur de Herreros

Villasur de Herreros
Village
Villasur de Herreros is a municipality of Burgos province, located in the upper valley of the Arlanzón, at the foot of the Sierra de la Demanda, made up of the settlements of Villasur and Urrez, with 269 inhabitants. It was resettled in the mid-9th century by the Ansúrez family, from whose name the village's own derives, and in 964 Count Fernán González granted its old church grazing and timber-cutting rights in the mountains of Urrez, Brieva and Caprera; it later belonged, as a town under ecclesiastical seigneury, to the Archbishopric of Burgos. It preserves a medieval wall, a Romanesque bridge and the church of the Assumption. It lived off its coal mines and the mining railway that served them, today converted into the greenway of the Sierra de la Demanda.
The Úzquiza reservoir
Nature
The dam, also known as the second Arlanzón reservoir, closes off the river in its upper reach, at the foot of the Sierra de la Demanda, in the municipality of Villasur de Herreros, and supplies water to the city of Burgos. It takes its name from Úzquiza, the settlement that, together with Herramel and Villorobe, was submerged under its waters in 1986; the dam entered service in 1989, and its reservoir, with a capacity of 75 hm³ and an area of 313 hectares, is used for water supply, irrigation and electricity production. Its waters, surrounded by oak groves and pine forests, are a wintering ground for waterfowl.
