What to see and do in Ibeas de Juarros

Ibeas de Juarros
Village
Ibeas de Juarros is a municipality of 1,492 inhabitants in the Alfoz de Burgos district, whose territory contains two World Heritage sites: the Atapuerca sites and the Camino de Santiago. The main access to the sites is in the village, where in 2009 the headquarters of the Atapuerca Foundation, designed by architect Ignacio Camarero, was opened. Its name may come from the Basque Ibaia, "river," already documented in 921 as Ebeia. Its red beans are famous, hand-grown on the banks of the Arlanzón for olla podrida, a typical Burgos dish with beans and pork products from the matanza (traditional pig slaughter).

Food and drink
They are grown in the flood plains of the Arlanzón by traditional methods, with no machinery beyond that used to prepare the ground. They are the basis of the Burgos olla podrida, stewed with the products of the slaughter in an earthenware dish.

Nature
At the bottom of a thirteen-metre shaft, at the end of a gallery of the Cueva Mayor, appeared the largest accumulation of human fossils in the world: thousands of remains of Homo heidelbergensis, among them the so-called Skull 5.

Nature
The sierra of Atapuerca is a modest limestone hill that separates the basin of the Arlanzón from that of the Ubierna. That natural corridor between the meseta and the valley of the Ebro explains why it was an obligatory passage for fauna and for humans for a million years.
