What to see and do in Hontoria de la Cantera

Hontoria de la Cantera
Village
Hontoria de la Cantera is a municipality in the Alfoz de Burgos district, 20 kilometres from the capital, whose name recalls a golden spring (Fonteauria, documented since 1044) and whose surname refers to its limestone quarries, worked since Roman times; much of the stone of Burgos Cathedral came from here. A Roman road that linked Numantia with Lara de los Infantes and Sasamón used to pass through the town, and at the hermitage of Saelices six Roman funerary stelae were found, now in the Burgos Museum. With 172 inhabitants, it preserves a prison carved into the quarry itself and the hermitage of San Felices.
The stone that built the cathedral
Curiosity
From these quarries, worked since the beginning of the Christian era, came the white limestone, workable and resistant to the weather, with which the cathedral of Burgos, the Casa del Cordón and the Arco de Santa María were built.
