Mecerreyes
Village
Mecerreyes is a municipality of 176 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, province of Burgos, whose name is probably of Arabic origin («maza rais», meadow or field) and whose residents are known as guiletos, a demonym derived from guilla, harvest. The earliest signs of settlement date back to the Neolithic, and the Romans left at Valdarcos ceramic remains of terra sigillata and a funerary stele from the year 50 bearing the name of the first known native inhabitant of the place, Cayo Aerno. The village's origin lies between the 9th and 10th centuries, through the resettlement by Alfonso III in 868 or the founding of Lara in 912. It preserves the dolmen of Mazariegos and an old Roman terra sigillata pottery kiln at Valdarcos, and its dulzaina tradition is celebrated every year with a festival dedicated to this instrument.
