Cuevas de San Clemente
Village
Cuevas de San Clemente is a hamlet of 52 inhabitants in the Arlanza district, 29 kilometres from Burgos, standing at 1,033 metres on a plateau bordered to the south by the río de la Vega. Part of its territory lies within the Sabinares del Arlanza Special Protection Area, where griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures breed. It is the birthplace of the painter Modesto Ciruelos, a pioneer of expressionist abstraction in Spain. Its parish church, built in Romanesque-revival style, retains Gothic remains and a 12th-century baptismal font; the village also has the Fuente de San Clemente and celebrates its festivities on 29 September, for San Miguel Arcángel. Its gastronomy relies on red beans, game, seasonal mushrooms and roast lamb.
