Quintanilla de la Mata
Village
Quintanilla de la Mata is a municipality of 109 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, province of Burgos, inhabited since the Lower Palaeolithic; its surname "de la Mata" refers to the holm oak woodlands, such as that of La Andaya, which it shares with neighbouring Lerma, that surround its municipal land. The first documentary record of the village dates from 1242, and its ordinances, from 1558, predate even those of Lerma. Grapes historically carried great weight in its economy, today protected by the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Arlanza: of the thirteen wine presses (lagares) it once had in the early 20th century, only two or three still stand. Its Gothic church of San Adrián, with a hall-church layout, preserves a Romanesque baptismal font and a Churrigueresque altarpiece designed by Félix de Rivas in 1737.
