What to see and do in Velayos

Velayos
Village
Velayos is a village of Ávila province, with about 203 inhabitants, situated at 935 metres above sea level on a sedimentary plain with hardly any trees, dominated by cereal fields and the occasional pine wood, crossed from north to south by the Madrid-Irún railway line, with a former station, now unused, three kilometres from the village. It borders Santo Domingo de las Posadas, Maello, Blascosancho and Vega de Santa María. In the mid-19th century it reached 895 inhabitants, four times today's population, a demographic decline common to much of this Castilian plain. Its church is dedicated to San Isidro Labrador.
The dry-farmed chickpeas of Velayos
Food and drink
The chickpeas grown in the municipality's brown soils rank, alongside those of Fontiveros, among the characteristic products of northern Ávila: thin-skinned and tender when cooked, they are the base ingredient of the cocido morañego.
