Labajos
Village
Labajos is a Segovian town of about 105 inhabitants, in the Segovian countryside and beside the old road to La Coruña, on what was once the Camino Real that climbed to the Guadarrama pass, of which old muleteers' inns remain. It received the title of town from Philip IV by charter of 1628, and its name comes from the ponds or lavajos that never dry up on its territory. In 1752 it had about 800 inhabitants, among farmers, day labourers and muleteers, as well as shepherds, weavers, bakers and innkeepers who served the travellers on the main road of Castile; by around 1850 it had some 150 houses spread over fourteen cobbled streets and a square. Today the village is surrounded by dry cereal land and pine forests.
