Adanero
Village
Adanero is a town of around 207 inhabitants in the comarca of La Moraña (Ávila), at 910 metres above sea level and beside the old road from Madrid to La Coruña. Its name recalls the old village of Adano, destroyed during the Reconquest; the present-day settlement, newly founded, is first documented in 1250. Philip IV granted it town status in 1630, and in 1691 Charles II appointed Pedro Núñez de Prado first Count of Adanero, a title linked to the palace that stands today on the plaza Mayor next to the town hall, dating from the mid-19th century and known for the clock that has kept the town's hours. In the mid-19th century, according to Madoz's Dictionary, its residents lived off farming, mule-driving and the livestock trade.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Adanero
Monument
Over an earlier 13th-century Romanesque-Mudéjar church, of which two round brick arches survive in the present chancel, work on the church we see today began in 1563 and was not completed until 1584, with an almost total renovation of the naves and the tower, set on the north face and topped with a Herrerian-style spire. The interior, with three naves separated by columns with arches decorated with polychrome rosettes, is covered by an artesonado ceiling with Renaissance motifs. In the last years of the 17th century the transept area was remodelled, with a dome of Baroque stuccowork and the arms of the Comital House on the pendentives, and in 1794 the present façade was raised, inspired by a Herrerian-style bell-gable. It has been a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1998.
