What to see and do in San Bartolomé de Béjar

San Bartolomé de Béjar
Village
San Bartolomé de Béjar is a village of barely 44 inhabitants in the Ávila comarca of Alto Tormes, with a territory of 16.5 km²; in the mid-19th century it still had more than 400 residents. Despite its position at the edge of the province, it is well connected by the AV-100 road, which links it with El Barco de Ávila and, via the Puerto de la Hoya, with the Ruta de la Plata towards Salamanca; after the closure of the Vía de la Plata railway it now has only one regular bus line to Madrid. It honours its patron San Bartolomé on 24 August and San Marcos, its second patron, on 25 April.
The hermitage of San Marcos
Monument
On the outskirts of the town centre stood the hermitage dedicated to San Marcos, one of the two patron saints of the municipality along with San Bartolomé, in a district of broken and rocky ground at 1,117 metres of altitude.
Between the Sierra de Béjar and the Cabezo de Neila
Nature
The 16.49 square kilometres of the municipal district spread out at 1,117 metres between two massifs, over what Madoz called land broken by crags, with high-altitude pasture and scattered Pyrenean oak woodland.
The two perennial streams
Nature
The municipality has two streams that never quite dry up in summer and that have made it possible to irrigate the village's vegetable plots, the historic basis of flax and vegetable growing in a mountain municipal district.
From 409 to 44 residents
Curiosity
The municipality had 409 inhabitants and 130 houses when Madoz described it in 1846; the 2025 register records 44 people. It is one of the sharpest demographic declines in the whole comarca.
The two patron saint festivals
Activity
The municipality keeps two patron saints and two dates: San Marcos, on 25 April, when the countryside starts to turn green, and San Bartolomé, on 24 August, which is the great summer festival and brings the village's sons and daughters back.
The flax of San Bartolomé
Historical milestone
In the mid-nineteenth century the municipal district produced more than a hundred and fifty fanegas of linseed a year, far above cereal, in a crop that supplied the domestic looms of the comarca and of the neighbouring Sierra de Béjar.
