What to see and do in Huecas

Huecas
Village
Huecas is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in Toledo, with 890 inhabitants, situated at the foot of a hill crossed by a stream; its name derives from the Arabic Waqqas. The Camino de Santiago del Sureste passes through the village. Its municipal area preserves remains of a Chalcolithic settlement from the third millennium BC and of a Roman villa from the 3rd and 4th centuries. It was a Muslim town of some cultural appeal, birthplace of the 13th-century canon Marcos de Occas, a translator of the Toledo School. In the early 16th century the rollo bearing the coat of arms of the Ayala family, lords of the place, was erected. Its parish church is dedicated to San Juan Bautista, next to the ermita de Santa Eugenia, and it maintains the historic springs of El Caño, Marjalea and El Pilar.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Huecas
Monument
The church of San Juan Bautista, patron saint of Huecas, stands on a hill in the middle of an open plain. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, the period to which the main chapel belongs, and continued until the 19th century. The building is described in the ninth volume of Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico de España, in the entry devoted to Huecas. Its main altarpiece was restored between 2011 and 2012. Next to the church stand the hermitage of Santa Eugenia and the town's justice pillar (rollo de justicia).
Chalcolithic Settlement and Roman Villa of Huecas
Monument
The district of Huecas preserves the remains of a Chalcolithic settlement from the third millennium BC in the Valle de las Higueras, near the village, still under study. West of the present-day hamlet, the Romans established a villa of which remains from the 3rd and 4th centuries survive, where coins from the time of Constantine the Great have been found, evidence of very ancient settlement in the municipality.
Historic Fountains of Huecas
Monument
The El Caño, Marjalea and El Pilar fountains supplied the town for centuries and form part of the municipality's traditional water heritage.
