What to see and do in Segurilla

Segurilla
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra de San Vicente, in the province of Toledo, which preserves an Islamic watchtower of circular plan and some eighteen metres in height, built in the tenth century within the defensive network of the Middle March, and the parish church of San Juan Bautista, of the sixteenth century; it shares with Hinojosa the comarca's reputation for cured meats, with slaughter sausages air-cured, and at Carnival it holds La Vaquilla, in which the release of a heifer through the streets is re-enacted.
Watchtower of Segurilla
Monument
The watchtower of Segurilla stands at the highest point of a hill, at 623 metres above sea level, with views over the Tajo and Alberche basins, the Montes de Toledo, the Sierra de Gredos and the Sierra de San Vicente. Built around the year 937, already in the 10th century, during the caliphate of Abd al-Rahman III, it formed part of the watch network of the Marca Media, the frontier centred on Toledo, with functions of warning against threats and containing the enemy's first attack. It is a circular Islamic tower, about 18 metres high, built of rubble masonry and lime, on which the putlog holes from the scaffolding can still be seen; its access door, located several metres above the ground, was reached by a wooden or rope ladder. At its foot, on 27 July 1809, the Battle of Talavera was fought, in which the French army was defeated by the Anglo-Spanish forces.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Segurilla
Monument
The church of San Juan Bautista de Segurilla (Sierra de San Vicente, Toledo) is a 16th-century parish church, built during the town's period of greatest population growth. Its large hexastyle granite portico and semicircular apse stand out. Inside, the image of the Santísimo Cristo de las Maravillas, patron of the village, is venerated, and an image of the Nazarene attributed to the sculptor Luis Salvador Carmona is also preserved.
La Vaquilla of Segurilla
Activity
La Vaquilla de Segurilla, the town's carnival festival, was traditionally celebrated on Ash Wednesday, although it was moved to the following Saturday afternoon to encourage participation. The village's young people invite those attending to a meal that always includes rice with salt cod; afterwards they perform a dance rehearsed in the preceding days that ends with the simulated death of the figure representing a heifer, after which a festive battle breaks out with confetti and paper streamers.
The cured meats of Segurilla
Food and drink
Segurilla shares with Hinojosa the comarca's cured-meat fame, with pig-slaughter sausages cured in the air and sold directly in the town. Production is concentrated in the cold months and supplies the markets of Talavera.
