What to see and do in Cervera de los Montes

Cervera de los Montes
Village
Cervera de los Montes is a municipality in the Sierra de San Vicente comarca, in the province of Toledo, with 513 inhabitants (INE 2025), 10 km from Talavera de la Reina, in a small valley surrounded by hills. Its name comes from the Latin cervus, "deer," plus an abundance suffix; it is likely that the area was the scene of Viriathus's struggles against Rome, who would have camped on the nearby Mount San Vicente. The municipality officially adopted its current name in 1916, as part of the state process of distinguishing repeated place names. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a Renaissance temple of granite ashlar with a Talavera ceramic altarpiece, and to the north of the town centre remain the ruins of the medieval tower of Los Torrejones.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Cervera
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Cervera de los Montes is a single-nave Renaissance temple, built of granite ashlar, which preserves a Talavera ceramic altarpiece at its high altar. Pascual Madoz described it in 1847 as a curato de primer ascenso, dedicated to the Asunción de Nuestra Señora.
Los Torrejones
Monument
Los Torrejones are the remains of an old watchtower located about 200 metres north of the town centre of Cervera de los Montes, atop a hill. The tower, of which only ruins remain today, had a basement and formed part of a line of defensive watchtowers that protected the approaches to Talavera de la Reina.

The change of name of Cervera in 1916
Curiosity
Until the 1916 reform of municipal naming, the village was called simply Cervera. On 2 July of that year, a royal decree published in the Gaceta de Madrid approved the reform proposed by the Real Sociedad Geográfica, which changed the names of 573 Spanish municipalities with repeated names, and the municipality officially became known as Cervera de los Montes.
