Reservoir of Cazalegas Nature · Cazalegas, Sierra de San Vicente, Toledo The Cazalegas reservoir was built in 1949 on the river Alberche, a tributary of the Tagus, with a capacity of 7 cubic hectometres and about 150 hectares of water surface, to prevent flooding in nearby towns and to divert water to the Canal Bajo del Alberche. Its construction, together with that of the canal, used Republican prisoners from the Civil War as forced labour, and it was inaugurated that same year by Francisco Franco. Managed by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Tajo, it supplies water and irrigation to nearby market gardens and is an area for water sports such as wakesurfing or water-skiing, as well as swimming. It is also an excellent spot for observing waterfowl and birds of prey, and a popular place for fishing carp, barbel and boga.
