Corral de Almaguer
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Mancha de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, set beside the river Riánsares at 724 metres above sea level and with one of the most extensive districts in the province, 328 square kilometres; its name harks back to the Muslim general Al-Magued, who established a fortified position here at the beginning of the eighth century, it received the title of town in 1312 and the privilege of an annual fair in 1342, and it preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, declared national artistic heritage, and the shrine of la Muela Coronada, the goal of its pilgrimages.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Corral de Almaguer
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, in Corral de Almaguer, holds the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and its founding is believed to possibly date from the 11th century, when the Order of Santiago built numerous churches in the region. It consists of three naves divided into six bays, a larger transept bay and six chapels arranged irregularly. The main altar features a notable Baroque altarpiece with Solomonic columns presided over by a large canvas of the Assumption of the Virgin, and the organ case, polychrome though deteriorated, also stands out. The main portal, on the south side, is a notable example of Toledan Plateresque. It was declared a historic-artistic monument on 29 December 1981, by royal decree published in the BOE in 1982.
Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Muela Coronada
Monument
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Muela stands on the Muela hill, 4 kilometres from Corral de Almaguer, and houses the image of the Virgen de la Muela Coronada, patroness of the town together with Santa Águeda. The Virgin is carried there in pilgrimage on the first Sunday of May, and returns on the first Sunday of September. The building is arranged in two rooms: the main altar, with the altarpiece flanked by images of Fátima and San Nicolás, separated by a wooden grille from the choir where the processional platforms and the banners of the quintas (age cohorts) are kept; and the chapel of Santa Águeda, with murals whose Renaissance frescoes were discovered in 1985. Behind the altar, the camarín preserves the ground stone bearing the image of the Virgen de la Piedad, from the former ermita.
