What to see and do in La Villa de Don Fadrique

La Villa de Don Fadrique
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Mancha de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, first called La Puebla de la Isla until in 1343 the master Fadrique Alfonso of Castile granted it the title of town, and bearing its present name since 1916; it preserves underground dwellings or silos that housed the day labourers, the Casa de la Tercia, begun in 1506 to store the grain and the tithes, an eighteenth-century windmill converted into a dovecote and the Gothic-Renaissance church of la Asunción, and in July 1932 it lived through a peasant uprising known as the events of La Villa de Don Fadrique.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de La Villa de Don Fadrique
Monument
16th-century parish church in Gothic-Renaissance style in La Villa de Don Fadrique (La Mancha de Toledo, Toledo), the main monument in the municipality. Its original construction was completed in 1537, with a single nave divided into five bays, a barrel vault with lunettes and a main chapel covered by a half-dome. It preserves a late Gothic western portal, another southern one in the Doric order, and a Gothic-plateresque baptismal font from 1548. In 1777 the chapel of the Cristo del Consuelo was added, and in the 18th century the interior was renovated in late Baroque and Neoclassical styles after a probable fire; the three-tiered bell tower dates from the early 20th century.
Hermitage of el Cristo del Consuelo
Monument
The Cristo del Consuelo, patron saint of La Villa de Don Fadrique, is venerated in a Neoclassical chapel completed in 1777, as recorded on a plaque located behind the high altar. It is reached from the main nave of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, through three round arches; it was built at the expense of the devotion of the whole neighbourhood. Two large columns support the vault, on whose pendentives there are four oil paintings depicting the Fathers of the Western Church. The image of the crucified Christ presiding over the altar is a 20th-century wooden carving, the work of the sculptor Pedro Verdugo.
Tercia House of La Villa de Don Fadrique
Monument
Building in La Villa de Don Fadrique (comarca of La Mancha de Toledo) begun in 1506 by the master builder Pedro Naharro and completed by Fernando del Provencio, the same architect who built the church tower. It was used to store grain and the third part of the tributes in kind collected by the Order, and its facade bears the coat of arms with the royal arms of León and Castile.
Silos of La Villa de Don Fadrique
Monument
Complex of underground dwellings in La Villa de Don Fadrique, among which the Silo de Flores, the Silo de Urbano, the Silo del Conde and the Silo del Guarda stand out, conceived as a shelter for farmers and working animals during harvest tasks. Inside, stables with mangers for livestock and resting areas with a fireplace and beds for the workers could be distinguished. The Silo de Urbano, the most complex, has up to seven interior spaces and vaults reinforced with pointed ribs reminiscent of Gothic architecture. Although part of the complex is abandoned, some silos, such as the Silo del Conde, are preserved in good condition.
Mill of la Cervanta
Monument
An 18th-century windmill later converted into a dovecote, an unusual transformation in Manchegan milling.
From La Puebla de la Isla to Don Fadrique
Curiosity
The town was originally called La Puebla de la Isla because of its geography. In 1343 Master Fadrique Alfonso de Castilla granted it the title of villa and it came to be called La Puebla de Don Fadrique, until it took its present name in 1916.
The 1932 events
Curiosity
In July 1932 the town experienced a peasant uprising known as the events of La Villa de Don Fadrique, which left casualties among the day labourers and the Guardia Civil.
