What to see and do in Aldeanueva de San Bartolomé

Aldeanueva de San Bartolomé
Village
Aldeanueva de San Bartolomé is a municipality in the comarca of La Jara, in Toledo, with 404 inhabitants, in a valley south of a hill, among the sierras of La Estrella, La Nava and Altamira. It arose around 1425 when shepherds, probably from Mohedas, formed a hamlet joined to the village of Toledillo under the name Aldea Nueva de Mohedas; on becoming independent it changed "de Mohedas" to "de San Bartolomé", the patron of its church, and it is known locally as Aldeanovita. Its municipal area preserves the Neolithic dolmen of the Aldehuela and the remains of an Iron Age hillfort. Its main monument is the church of San Bartolomé, from the 16th century, with Gothic and Renaissance elements, and at the meals of its patronal festivities the cocido castellano and stewed partridge are served.

Nature
The dolmen of Aldeanueva de San Bartolomé, known as the dolmen de la Aldehuela, is a Neolithic megalithic tomb located near the boundary with the district of La Estrella, in the region of La Jara (Toledo). Next to it are preserved the so-called Murallas de Castrejón, or Cerca de los Moros, the remains of an Iron Age castro which local tradition interprets as a shepherds' shelter.

Curiosity
The village grew up around 1425 from the union of several shepherds' settlements, in a territory that had changed hands several times up to the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.

Food and drink
Aldeanueva preserves as dishes of its own the Castilian stew of chickpeas, bacon and vegetables and the braised partridge, making use of the small game that abounds in its dehesas. They are served at the meals of the patronal festivities.
