What to see and do in El Campillo de la Jara

El Campillo de la Jara
Village
El Campillo de la Jara is a municipality in the comarca of La Jara, in the province of Toledo, with 326 inhabitants (INE 2025), on a plain watered by the Cubilar and Huso streams, tributaries of the Tagus. Settled after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa under the name Nava del Campillo, it is recorded as El Campillo in 1495, when it did not yet form a single hamlet but groups of houses with enclosures, olive groves and vineyards; in 1916 the name de la Jara was added. In the mid-19th century its industry consisted of 14 flour mills and 3 oil mills. It preserves the building of the Campillo-Sevilleja railway station, evidence of a railway that was largely built but never opened and was converted decades later into a greenway. It celebrates its festival of San Blas after Candlemas.
Campillo-Sevilleja Station
Monument
The Campillo-Sevilleja station was built as part of the Talavera de la Reina-Villanueva de la Serena railway line, intended to cross the region of La Jara, but the route, which suffered numerous delays, was abandoned in the 1960s without ever entering service. The old station precinct, in El Campillo de la Jara, is now part of the Greenway of La Jara.
The Railway That Never Ran
Curiosity
The railway line planned across La Jara was largely built but never opened; decades later its tunnels, viaducts and stations were turned into a greenway.
Hermitage of Santa Perpetua y Santiago
Monument
The hermitage of Santa Perpetua y Santiago, on the outskirts of El Campillo de la Jara, was already described as a ruined building in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico of 1846, which cites it as "a ruined hermitage under the name of Sta. Perpetua y Santiago," proof that its deterioration dates back at least to the mid-19th century.
Festivities of San Blas de El Campillo
Activity
The patron saint festivities of San Blas in El Campillo de la Jara are held on 3 February, the feast day of the town's patron saint. The day before, 2 February, the Candelaria festivities are held in honour of the town's Virgin, opening the village's festive cycle.
From Nava del Campillo to El Campillo
Historical milestone
The place began to be settled after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa under the name of Nava del Campillo, and already appears as El Campillo in 1495. The addition of de la Jara came with the reform of the municipal nomenclature of 1916.
