What to see and do in Navalmoralejo

Navalmoralejo
Village
Navalmoralejo is a municipality in La Campana de Oropesa, in the province of Toledo, with 56 inhabitants, one of the most depopulated in the province, at the foot of a mountain range, between the Tagus and the Andilucha stream. Its name, according to popular tradition, would come from “Las Navas del moro Alejo”, a Morisco banished from Ciudad de Vascos who worked as a shepherd, although recent studies derive it from Navalmoral, from being on a plain with mulberry trees. The village originated beside a Muslim watchtower and was repopulated between the late 13th and early 15th centuries. Within its municipal area the ruins of Ciudad de Vascos are preserved, a 10th-century Muslim city and one of the most important Andalusi sites in the province, open to visitors on Saturdays; the village is presided over by the church of San Pedro Apóstol.
Ciudad de Vascos
Monument
Ruins of a 10th-century Muslim city located in the municipal area of Navalmoralejo, one of the most important Andalusi sites in the province of Toledo, which can be visited on Saturdays. It corresponds to a madina of Al-Andalus that was inhabited between the 9th and 12th centuries, when it was abandoned until the present day, and of which mainly the remains of its defences are preserved, along with references to its urban layout left by various travellers throughout history. Its present name may derive from the territory of Basak, one of the three districts then dependent on Talavera de la Reina, although some experts have proposed identifying it with the vanished madina of Nafza, of Berber origin, without agreement on the matter.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Navalmoralejo
Monument
The church of San Pedro Apóstol of Navalmoralejo consists of a single nave covered by a hipped timber ceiling, with reinforcements at the rear corners. According to a 19th-century description, the church was an annex of the parish of La Estrella and was served by a curate. It is the main historic building in the town centre of this small municipality in the Campana de Oropesa district.
Andilucha Stream
Nature
The Andilucha stream runs through the municipal area of Navalmoralejo from south to north, passing close to the population centre, at 423 metres above sea level. It then continues its course until it flows into the Tagus, already within the municipal area of Azután, being one of the main features of the municipality's natural landscape.
The plains of Alejo the Moor
Curiosity
Local tradition attributes the founding of the village to a Muslim named Alejo from the Ciudad de Vascos, from whom the name would come. Scholars now link it to the mulberry trees of the area or to a nearby spring.
Fifty-six residents
Curiosity
Navalmoralejo had 190 inhabitants in the mid-19th century and in 2025 barely reached 56, making it one of the most depopulated municipalities in the province of Toledo.
Festivities of la Fraternidad
Activity
Fiestas de la Fraternidad of Navalmoralejo (Toledo), a summer celebration that brings together residents and emigrants in late July. They are complemented by the pilgrimage of San Antón, on 17 January, another fixed date on the municipality's festive calendar.
