What to see and do in Aldeanueva de Barbarroya

Aldeanueva de Barbarroya
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Jara, in the province of Toledo, born around 1470 when the inhabitants abandoned the settlement of Santiago de Zarzuela as unhealthy and installed themselves on a rise; it preserves the church of Santiago Apóstol, begun in 1514 in Gothic-Plateresque style with ribbed vaults, and the washhouse of la Fuente Blanca, the largest complex of public washhouses in La Jara, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2010, and through its district passes the Vía Verde de la Jara, with seventeen tunnels and five viaducts on the course of a railway never finished.
Church of Santiago Apóstol de Aldeanueva de Barbarroya
Monument
Parish church of Aldeanueva de Barbarroya (Toledo), dedicated to Santiago Apóstol. Its fabric was built in two phases: the first, of a monumental character, began in 1514 under the direction of master builder Trujillo, in Gothic-Plateresque style, with a three-sided apse and buttresses topped with Renaissance finials shaped like balls, covered with a ribbed vault and medallions carved on the keystones; the second phase, more modest, corresponded to the western nave, closed with a simple wooden par y nudillo ceiling. The west façade, where the main door opens, is topped by a two-bay bell-gable.
Washhouse of the Fuente Blanca
Monument
One of the largest groups of public washhouses in the west of the province of Toledo and the most important in La Jara, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2010.
Greenway of la Jara
Nature
The Greenway of La Jara follows the route of the Talavera de la Reina-Villanueva de la Serena railway line, which was never completed, and runs for 52.4 kilometres between the foothills of the Montes de Toledo and the vega of the river Tajo, mostly through the region of La Jara, in the province of Toledo. It has seventeen tunnels and five viaducts amid Mediterranean woodland scenery, and is equipped for hiking, cycle touring and horse riding, forming part of the Natural Trails Network of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Since October 2021 it has remained closed to the public owing to the poor state of conservation of the route.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Espino
Monument
Chapel with a single nave and a par y nudillo wooden ceiling, surrounded on three sides by a wide portico that reflects its importance as a pilgrimage site. Inside, the image of the Virgen del Espino, patroness of the town, is venerated, and a funerary tombstone of a knight who fought in the tercios of Flanders is preserved. The patronal festivities in her honour are held on the last Sunday of August.
From Santiago de Zarzuela to Aldeanueva
Historical milestone
The first settlement was Santiago de Zarzuela, beside the stream of the same name. Around 1470 the residents abandoned it for reasons of healthiness and settled on a height, giving rise to Aldeanueva de Zarzuela, afterwards Aldea de Valdearroyo and finally Barbarroya.
