Jirueque
Village
Jirueque is a municipality in the northern sierra of Guadalajara, on the banks of the Henares, with 44 inhabitants and an area of 10.64 km². During the Middle Ages, according to the chronicler Antonio Herrera Casado, it passed from the Tierra de Atienza to the Común de Jadraque, and became subject to a lordship as early as the late Middle Ages; in the mid-19th century it had 134 inhabitants, more than three times its present number. It preserves the church of San Bartolomé, from the 16th century, which holds the tomb known as El Dorado, and the hermitage of the Virgin of la Soledad. It celebrates San Antonio on 13 June and its patron saint, San Bartolomé, on 24 August, and today has a sports centre and a public park as its only recreational spaces.
