What to see and do in Jadraque

Jadraque
Village
Jadraque is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara, in the Henares valley, at 830 metres altitude and 48 kilometres from the provincial capital. Its name comes from the Arabic 'Xadraq'. Nearby, the armies of John II of Castile and Alfonso V of Aragon came close to clashing in the 15th century, and in 1714 Elisabeth Farnese, on the eve of her marriage to Philip V, met here with the Princess of the Ursins. With 1,522 inhabitants, it preserves a 17th-century church with a Flagellated Christ by Zurbarán and a carving attributed to Pedro de Mena, the Ursulinas mansion -a refuge in 1808 for Jovellanos and Goya- and the Inquisition mansion. It is also a provincial benchmark for kid goat roasted in a wood-fired oven, served in the inns at the foot of its castle.

Food and drink
Jadraque is the provincial benchmark for kid roasted in a wood-fired oven, cut into quarters and made with little more than salt, water and lard. The inns at the foot of the castle have served it for generations and it has given its name to the cooking of the Henares valley.
