Huertahernando
Village
Huertahernando is a municipality of Señorío de Molina, in Guadalajara, with 51 inhabitants, situated on a high hill and surrounded by woods of holm oaks, pines, savins and junipers, within the Alto Tajo nature reserve. It was a strategic location during the Reconquista and, in the early 19th century, the scene of the activity of the Empecinado's division: in January 1811 it withstood the attack of the French general Hugo, who was forced to retreat, and in reprisal the village was sacked and burned by French troops; in 1840 it was sacked again by Carlist troops. Its parish church of the Purísima Concepción combines pointed-arch vaults with a Baroque bell-gable, preserves a fountain with a trough commissioned by Charles III, and celebrates its festivities on 15 August.
